Burke reached out over the table and held her hand. They were early for dinner. There were two older couples in booths by the wall. But the hostess had seated them by the window. The brick streets and summer flowers outside made a nice snapshot of the city he loved.

Rachel squeezed his hand back. “You sure you don’t mind eating this early?”

“I’m impressed you’re still awake.”

“I try to switch my schedule for Bruno. I stay up as long as I can on Sundays.” She took a sip of wine. “This place is really nice.”

“Detective. The chef is excited to see you not doing takeout. He’s sent these appetizers on the house.” The server, one of Rosie’s former residents, set two huge plates down.

“Tell him thanks.” Burke fiddled with the stem of his wineglass.

“I will.” She pivoted and left to check on another table.

Their table turned silent, not because of an awkward pause, but because of the amazing food.

Rachel stared at him. “So, before Lexi showed me the photo album . . .”

He could feel the blush rising on his neck.

“Young Burke is adorable, but older Burke is . . .” She leaned across the table. “. . . sexy as fuck.”

His hand landed on her knee.

“Wait, before I forget what I was going to say . . . Before she pulled out the photo album, there was a notebook on the table.”

Fuck, he’d left his active thinking notebook out. It didn’t contain anything classified, but still.

“I’m sorry. Once I realized what it was, I put it down. Tunnels?”

He swallowed. Keeping things from her would eventually become impossible. He could feel his connection with her growing. “Yes.” He told her everything about how they’d figured out about the tunnels and gained access with Reagan’s help. How they’d taken down many of Allen’s enforcers. The eventual shot that had kept Corbin from killing his father to save Burke. He might have left out the nurses and how a room full of well-trained professionals saved his life. Because explaining the twenty slips of phone numbers wasn’t something he wanted to have to do.

“But you can’t figure out the correlation between the entrances?”

“No.”

“Do you think they’re new? Like, did Allen have them made, or did he discover them?”

“I . . . I assumed he had a witch working for him.” Fuck. Why hadn’t he thought of that? “But yeah, there’s nothing to say he didn’t find them.”

“And if he found them?” Rachel sipped her wine.

“There could be more entrances we don’t know about.”

“Or a completely different set.” She put the glass down.

“Damn.”

They moved on from the subject of Allen and tunnels once the restaurant filled with more patrons. He wowed her with stories of his building.

With full stomachs, he was set to take her right home. But she held out her phone. “Can we stop here first? I want to buy you a gift.”
